Kitchen plans, part one of many

We've been dreaming of gutting our kitchen for three years now.

The day we moved in the oven didn't work, thankfully my parents were in the middle of their kitchen reno so they were able to give us their old one.

Over time almost everything else has fallen apart.

The cabinets are original to our 1950's ranch and had birch door fronts back in the day. Back in the 80's the previous owners thought it would be a good idea (side eyes at them) when they put in new pink laminate counter tops to add laminate to the door fronts too. The doors are so heavy that they're pulling the hinges right out of the cabinets. I gave up trying to put them back on so we have a majorly ugly open storage look going on!

The (empty) soffits are covered in pink wallpaper, the switch for the disposal (which doesn't work anymore) is on the front of the sink cabinet (water and electricity are best friends right!?), the back splash tile looked like an 80's McDonald's bathroom, there is next to no counter space, the dishwasher does not wash dishes-it needs to be fired (Office Space printer scene style!), some of the counters are actually loose in places, the faucet only works if you don't turn it up too high otherwise the water shuts off AND the kitchen and laundry room (directly below the kitchen) are on the same breaker so we can't run the microwave or dishwasher and the washer or dryer at the same time because it trips the breaker.

These pictures are from our first showing with our realtor.

Yikes.

It was overwhelming but I could see through all that CRAP to the potential!

We haven't been able to do a lot with it over the years but stripping the wallpaper in the dining area and  painting the soffits and the tile white was a big improvement

We also removed the cook top that the previous owners had, you can see the piece of plywood below covering the hole in the counter top.

This coming spring we will finally be tackling this beast!

So, so, SOOOOO excited!!!!!

If you've been reading for a while now you know how budget conscious I am.
This reno will be done as cheaply as possible and I'm excited to share it all here!

Over the next couple weeks I'll be sharing some of our plans here so stay tuned and follow along if you want to.

Cabin Fever

So last week I informed my hubby that when we retire we are going to sell our house and buy a cabin.

He looked at me like I had lobsters crawling out of my ears....major brownie points if you know what movie that's from.

Apparently after 10+ years together we can still surprise each other.

Back in August I mentioned  that my Aunt and Uncle had a weekend place on a ranch, one of my most favorite places. I've noticed that the older I get (and the crazier the world gets) the more I just want to move away from it all.

Have a tiny little cabin, grow my own food, hike, fish, BE OUTSIDE.

"A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people whom it is easy to do good, and who are not accustomed to have it done to them; then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one's neighbor-such is my idea of happiness"

-Leo Tolstoy, Family Happiness

Ah, someday.

Until then, here is some cabin inspiration to get me by....

If you can't stand the ugliness, get out of the kitchen

We had high hopes of getting new appliances and doing some upgrades in the kitchen with our tax return this year but it's looking like that won't happen. Hooray for medical bills and upcoming root canals/crowns! :(
Regardless, I'm revisiting our kitchen/dining plans today because I've had new epiphanies and it's fun to day dream right!? I especially need those day dreams as I'm potty training our toddler this week. Pray for me!

(FYI- this is the longest post ever so if you can hang in until the end kudos to you!)

Here is our hideous, disgusting, 80's kitchen. I can't believe that I'm showing you pictures it's so embarrassing. By the way, aren't soffits the best!?  I'm pretty sure that there is nothing in the one below, except the electrical for that awful track light, either way it will be coming down!

NORTH WALL

A view into our beautiful dining room. Yep, you read that right...... not breakfast nook, DINING ROOM! That stupid peninsula is an absolute waste of space and will be ripped out...dishwasher will go flush against the wall and we'll add an L shaped banquette under the window and down the far wall. After we rip out that faux rock of course.

EAST WALL

SOUTH WALL
Yet another wonderful soffit, not sure what's in there.

See how far the fridge sticks out into the dining area? Counter depth fridge for sure when we get new appliances and then we'll build it in on the right side.

Isn't it lovely?!?
(Some of those pictures are from the real estate listing...can you guess which ones? Yikes!)

Enough of that hideousness....here's the plan.

So, here's the specifics:
Brass hardware, probably something similar to these ones on the far right, from Lee Valley Tools...

Black and white checkerboard flooring, set on a diagonal, probably will be linoleum.

I know you're all going to tell me to do tile or continue the hardwoods into the kitchen and believe me wood would be my first choice (that's what she said..sorry I can't help myself :) . However, not only do we not have the funds to add more hardwoods, we would have to refinish the entire first floor which means $$$$$$$. The floors are in AWFUL shape in the living room and the hallway....it's seriously a minefield of drywall screws IN the floor. I guess it was too squeaky in some spots for the previous owners...WHO DOES THAT!??!?!? Also, if we sunk all that money for wood or tile into this house we'd never get it back out if/when we sell in the future.

Anyway, my in laws have a great checkerboard lino in their laundry room and I'll probably do the same.

See....it's pretty!

Ok, bottom cabinets will most likely be darker but not as dark as my moodboards. Farrow and Balls Down Pipe is a favorite of mine and look how pretty it is with brass hardware!

I think I want something with a little more green in it though, like this.

I'm definitely planning on painting the window sashes black. It's such a beautiful detail!

Counter tops will most likely be laminate, yeah, yeah I know it's not ideal. Like I said though we have to think long term and keep the budget VERY small. I love the look of wood counter tops but they are pretty high maintenance. At least there are some decent looking laminates these days.

Banquette will be built in and look similar to these.

So, there you have it. Any amazing ideas or advice you have would be wonderful.

Anyone have wood counter tops and love/hate them?

Got any great resources for brass hardware or awesome paint colors I should know about?

Talk amongst yourselves while I potty train my two year old........

New headboard

Picked up this vintage channel back headboard for our guest room last night for $20!

I have SERIOUS connections people!!

While the upholstery isn't my favorite it is in perfect condition so I'm going to make it work. I'm thinking all white bedding, maybe some large scale black and white striped shams, leopard print pillow, modern art and lamp; wall color will stay the same muddy olive green similar to this.

I personally love the look of a super girly or antique bed with more masculine and modern elements.

 Pretty excited about this room!
